Dark Life

Grimes refuses to give Ty the key to the cell. Ty gets the key from him by reminding him that if Shade kills a girl on his watch, Grimes will be sent to worse assignments than Benthic Territory. Grimes reveals that Doc was Dr. Metzger before he was demoted and changed his name. Doc is the doctor who wrote the now-famous article about Dark Gifts and used Ty as a case study.

When Ty unlocks the door, Shade pulls him into the cage before leaving, locking Ty inside while he and Gemma are outside. Shade camouflages himself and follows Gemma out, forcing her to tell Grimes she is alone. Ty worries that Shade will take Gemma as a captive. Gemma quickly returns with keys to let Ty out.

Ty and Gemma revive Grimes, who was hit over the head by Shade. They try to convince him to wait for Doc. Grimes refuses and flees in one of the submarines, like everyone in the Trade Station aside from the pioneers and Doc. Ty loses track of Gemma, and she isn’t with the pioneers when he checks there. He sees the elevator go down to the saloon and realizes Gemma stole Grimes’s identification card.
