Chapter 34 Summary: “Sora: The Western Pass, Khitan”

Content Warning: This section of the guide includes discussion of illness, death, gender discrimination, and animal death.

Sora falls asleep in the sled and dreams about being nine years old. In her dream, she sings and dances with her family. The dream merges with a memory in which Daysum becomes ill with purple fever. When her family worries about the cost of the healer and medicines, Sora realizes how poor they are. She is supposed to stay away from Daysum but can’t, so she also catches the fever. Sora recovers in a couple of days, but it takes Daysum months to recover.

Mikail and Euyn wake up Sora to warn her about the oncoming avalanche.

Chapter 35 Summary: “Euyn: The Western Pass”

Euyn suggests that they try to outrun the avalanche on the sled. Sora argues that they won’t make it and that they should abandon the sled. They jump from the sled and crowd under a nearby overhang. Euyn thinks that they are going to die; the califers and sled get covered in snow and pushed into a gorge.

Eventually, Euyn realizes that the overhang is keeping them from being completely buried in snow.
